New History Trail offers outdoor fun and learning

The Point Roberts Historical Society is nearing the completion of the Point Roberts History Trail, a new project to showcase the Point’s rich history. The History Trail is a series of interpretive signs which explain local history where it happened.

After four years of work by a team of volunteers, the final signs are being installed this month. Found all over Point Roberts, over two dozen signs feature write-ups and historical photos. The History Trail covers subjects ranging from Coast Salish history, Icelandic heritage, neighborhoods and notable residents, memorable former businesses, to the Point’s recreation and culture.

The historical society received two grants for the project, one from the Whatcom Community Foundation’s Project Neighborly, and one from the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation’s Valerie Sivinski Fund.  Finding and reading all the signs is a fun outdoor activity for local residents and visitors alike to learn about and appreciate the fascinating history of Point Roberts. A map is in the works to guide the public to the sign locations.

After the economic impact of the border closure during the pandemic, it is hoped the History Trail, and the Point Roberts History Center Museum on Gulf Road, will help drive tourism as well as encourage visitors to spend more time on the Point and venture beyond gas stations and parcel depots.
