Free appliance pickup was big success

Posted

When Appliance Depot chose to include Point Roberts in their annual free appliance pickup program to honor Earth Day, they had to add another day because the demand was so great.

“We were swamped,” said Mel Monkelis, program director for the community-owned non-profit that combines reconditioning and salvaging appliances with job training.

Monkelis said they had pickups in 60 locations on May 1-2 on the Point, taking a total of four truckloads of unwanted appliances back to Bellingham. “We’ve never been to Point Roberts before and I think we’ll be doing this every year,” he said.

They also collected some novel items, Monkelis added, including an artfully decorated though non-functional fridge from a resident who had been at Woodstock and a Red Bull fridge shaped like a gas pump. “We already sold that one,” he said.

It took the Appliance Depot crew three hours to get to and from Point Roberts on their first day while they got their paperwork in order, but the second day “we got through in five minutes at each crossing,” Monkelis said.

“The moral of the story is to have your paperwork ready!” he said.
