2008 Point Roberts Seniors
By Roberto Angotti
Our senior year got underway with cheers and jeers as our pool player tournament progressed. Much to Jim’s dismay, Joe Carson was victorious.
The Whatcom County Senior Bureaucrats ascended upon us with a dictum to change our days, eliminate a day, find a local chef, and levy a huge financial assessment.
Through the efforts of Jim, Doug, Maggie, Monika, Bill, Eleanor, Roberto and the parks board, we kept them at bay. Through numerous e-mails, meetings and petitions, we kept our two days, the financial assessment was reduced, and the parks board renewed their contract.
In July, we lost Kent, our Bellingham chef, who traveled to Point Roberts twice weekly. We were sorry to see him go. Jim stepped up and cooked for a few months. We thank him for a great job. Then we found Diane, and this lady can cook. The soup, salads, and corn bread are a sample of what she does. Thank you, Diane.
Our fundraisers included a pancake breakfast in August, the snack bar at the Arts and Crafts Fair, and a Christmas Tea. Thanks to the Point Roberts Wind Ensemble who provided holiday music at our tea.
We miss Flo Johnson, living in Victoria, and Alice Duarte in Bellingham. Gracie and Midge now live at the Waterford.
Vaughn, Peggy, Jim and Marnie are not feeling well, and haven’t been to the center in a few months. Although out of sight, they are always in our thoughts. We were sorry to lose Faye and Margaret. To their families, we extend our sorrow.
On behalf of the board, Monika, Jim, Joanne, Jeff, Maggie, Doug, Curt, Bev, Jo and Eleanor, we wish you a very Merry Christmas, and a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.
Thank you to the donors in the community for their support.
